Opinion by Lawyer
I think that the YCJA is fair and equitable. I have seen many cases that I have worked on and the punishment is fitting to the crime that youths have committed. I was a lawyer in the Reena Virk case as Reena's family's lawyer. I thought that Kelly got what she deserved. The only thing that would have been better that they have now under the YCJA is if they had looked at Reena and Kelly's past history with each other. Now under the YCJA i see the judge now looks at a child's individual history rather than as a single incident. I like this because if two teens committed the same crime under the YOA they would get the same punishment even if one had past experiences with the police and the other didn't. Although, now under the YCJA if the same two teens committed the same crime then the one without past experiences would get off easier.
