Background
The YCJA was passed on February 4 2002 but was not enforced until April 1 2003. The YCJA a is a more fair and effective youth justice system. It gives rehabilitation before reintegration. Also it gives the option of extrajudicial measures. These provide consequences that keep the youth out of jail. This means that the officer can choose from: taking no further action, giving a warning, cautions whether police or crown, referrals, or extra judicial sanctions. Some sanctions may be: restitution or compensation, service to the victim or community, or attendance and participation in counselling and treatment programs.
